The 2016’s teams pulled out all the stops as they drew crowds to eat their fill in support of a worthy cause. A glorious Indian summer day provided the back drop to a successful cook-off.
Long-time competitor Bruce Stiles’ Intestinal Express team secret recipe was capped off with fresh lime (and a spritz of tequila for the adult crowd) and garnered the 1st place trophy. No doubt, the judges had a tough choice with second place, in fact a tie was declared between Belly Achin’ Blue and Back Porch Chili. I guess that was a win-win for everyone!
Visitors hailing from Tennessee to New York experienced chili tasting at 16 different booths where the flavors and styles were as different as the many trimmings gracing the tents. “Hillbilly Chili” not only served up some great chili but did it from their rustic mountain shack, complete with Granny and her rocking chair.
The UVA Drumline inspired us all, especially during our welcome ceremony capped off by a beautiful performance of our National Anthem. Up on the terrace, we were treated to The Campbell Road Band and to Rockslide, both amazingly talented bands that kept everyone dancing.
The silent auction bidding was, as always, spirited and competitive. Auction winners brought home everything from framed artwork and jewelry to local wine baskets and services.
The cornhole tournament drew novice and seasoned players from all over.
The 12th anniversary Cook-off helped raised more than $11,000.00 for the National Kidney Foundation and Good Doctor's Foundation. These non-profit organizations serve Central Virginia area patients of kidney disease, organ donors and recipients, and their families – conditions near and dear to the hearts of committee members, volunteers, entertainers, and chili teams who help to make this endeavor a success.
Congratulations to all the teams - as always, the judging was tight, the competition fierce and the chili was fantastic.
Mark your calendars - the Central Virginia Charity Chili Cook-off is held every year on the first Saturday in November, so we are in for November 4th, 2017! See you then.
