The 2014’s teams pulled out all the stops as they drew crowds to eat their fill in support of a worthy cause. Early November cold weather made the chili taste better than ever.
Newcomers to the Cook-off, Darryl and Earl of Belly Achin’ Blues swept the competition – wow! Their chili was a perfect blend of sweet, heat and taste, earning them
not only 1st place, but also the People’s Choice. Amazing win and well deserved! Long-time competitor Bruce Stiles’ Intestinal Express team secret recipe was capped off with fresh lime (and a spritz of
tequila for the adult crowd) and garnered the 2nd place trophy. Hot on their tail with a brilliant 3rd place was Touchdown Chili (with Dan Kilgore and Kevin Lenhardt), seasoned competitors whose first time in the winner’s circle have strengthened their resolve for a big win in 2015!
Visitors hailing from North Carolina to New York experienced chili tasting at 16 different booths where the flavors and styles were as different as the many trimmings gracing the tents. Intestinal Express,
comprised of Bruce Stiles, John Stiles and Graham Schwartz took home "Most Spirited Chili Team" for their crafty display, complete with a flaming toilet.
UVA Drumline inspired us all, especially during our welcome ceremony capped off by Jelita Hopkins’ beautiful performance of our National Anthem. Up on the terrace, the SoCo Loco band, kept everyone dancing. The silent auction bidding was, as always, spirited and competitive. Auction winners brought home everything from framed artwork and jewelry to local wine baskets and services.
The cornhole tournament drew novice and seasoned players from all over.
The 10th anniversary Cook-off helped raised nearly $10,000.00 for the National Kidney Foundation and Good Doctor's Foundation. These non-profit organizations serve Central Virginia area patients of kidney disease, organ donors and recipients, and their families – conditions near and dear to the hearts of committee members, volunteers, entertainers, and chili teams who help to make this endeavor a success.
Congratulations to all the teams - as always, the judging was tight, the competition fierce and the chili was fantastic.
Mark your calendars - the Central Virginia Charity Chili Cook-off is held every year on the first Saturday in November.
